Online Painting Class
Learn the Art of Cave Painting
Perfect for the Beginning Artist and Fun For All Skill Levels
So what are Cave paintings? Please read on...
Cave Paintings are simple compositions created in prehistoric times during the Upper Paleolithic period. That's 30,000 years ago! They are considered the earliest art forms in the world! They have been found at numerous locations around the globe. It is suggested that these paintings were used for decorations, but in fact it has yet to be determined the real reason.
These paintings were created with natural iron oxide pigments that were found in the earth. In this class you'll learn about the use of early pigments and how you too can use them to create contemporary designs that are fashioned after the style of early cave art. These cave paintings represent the beginning of Art and Art Materials as we know them today. No prior skills are required for this, just jump in and have fun. This is a most enjoyable way to paint and is a perfect 'project' for you to do alone or with the help of a youngster. This painting lesson is also for school age kids as well as adult learners.
After reading about this class, watch the short video presentation about the famous cave paintings of the Lascaux Caves in France. (see the link below) This will give you a greater appreciation for the art and understand why these are some of the earliest and most treasured art forms found in the world.
The site where our first painting exercise comes from, named the Lascaux Caves was declared a World Heritage Site in 1979. Watch the video for more background on the art of cave art.
