How to Blend for Realism - Painting Technique

Building your foundational skills with important fundamental painting skills will help you create more realistic and professional paintings...

There are many kinds of paint applications. Some artists like a loose style, while others like a more smooth or refined style. If you like painting realism and are looking to paint photo realism, then you need to learn the painting techniques for refined blending.

Perhaps you have been learning this style but are struggling with it. If you just can't seem to get that perfect blend...and sometimes it looks under-blended, sometimes it looks over-blended and no matter what you do it still looks flat or your colors look muddy. Can you relate? You have come to the right class. Artist and instructor Sue Pruett is a master blender! Sue has perfected her method and will show you how to avoid all the pitfalls that this style of painting can throw at you.

You will learn the painting techniques and how to blend with perfection, you will render flawless smooth surfaces that are called for in many styles of realistic still life and floral paintings. This blending method will give you the confidence to tackle many advanced subjects including portraiture, still life and flower painting.

The Class Overview

In this fundamental online art class you will begin by learning how to create a blended background for your mini fruit still life composition.

One of the features in this class is learning to mix a value scale of chromatic colors for your palette. This will help you learn to see the values for creating correct three dimensional form. Sue shows and explains how to mix these colors and where and how each color value will be used in the lesson.

Learning Outcomes:

This realistic and fundamental style of blending is quite structured. Initial layers are usually created by blending together opaque values using a controlled form of blending referred to as 'refined'. When the initial layers are dried, subsequent layers of opaque and transparent pigments render the final object.

  • This class will help you with mixing colors to a value scale
  • Correct placement of values to create form
  • Mottling a background to create depth
  • Layering of transparent and semi-transparent pigments to build form
  • Painting details

This class was the first class I bought from this art school. I should say that it exceeded my expectations! Lots of pages of very detailed instructions, many hours of videos, and Sue is a very talented teacher. She patiently goes over every detail, and explains every single step along the way. Sue is also very diligent answering questions on the forum, and her video classes give me a feeling of confidence, as well as a feeling of tranquility! You will never regret spending your money on this class! I learned a lot, and so will you!

I learned so much from this and achieved so much understanding about blending. Not only have my lillies been much admired but the techniques and skills learned have been carried to many other projects too. I loved this class and Sue is a great teacher that you can watch over and over. I like the fact that the mentioned time limits to complete are extended on request.
