As you progress through this course you'll learn about selecting the correct backgrounds for your painting compositions and why color key is an important concept to learn. The Beginning artist will gain artistic confidence when making these choices in the future. The key of your background will determin how you paint the rest of your composition, this becomes an important aspect when painting original art of your own.

Each painting lesson is broken down into bite size pieces, making it easy for the student to understand.                                                              What Is Value In Painting?

Discover the hidden secrets to creating a path of light in your paintings!

Besides learning about color, students study the most important property of color that is value. Students learn how to judge value, how to relate it to color and how light and shadow affect it. Learn how to create a path of light through a painting, directing the viewers eye by manipulating value is the key to a successful painting. Instructor Linda Wise helps the student 'see' value as they apply transparent color glazes to create a lovely tropical sunset painting.

Discover the fundamentals of still life painting, and create technically correct compositions!

Still life painting is wonderful, yet it can be a technical challenge for beginning artists, especially for those just starting out with this subject. As teachers we all understand these frustrations and want to share with you an easy approach to this subject. There's so much to think about, from correct perspective to managing the light source, capturing the correct form and placement of shadows...it can be overwhelming and daunting to say the least. However, when you have a good understanding of these concepts, it becomes a fun and exciting subject to paint. Think about all your collections and objects at home, just begging to be painted!

This portion of the course guides the student to approach a still life composition with greater artistic confidence and opens up a multitude of opportunities for creating professional looking art.

Learn to paint, simple and fast clouds, foliage and trees!!
Observe as artist Neadeen Masters shares a popular wet in wet painting technique, as she demonstrates how to use eye/hand coordination to control the brush to create certain effects. Being able to paint with a casual approach such as this is a fun and relaxing way to learn to paint.
This painting lesson is created with acrylic paints, easy to use and clean up. Acrylics dry quickly, so Neadeen shows you how to use Extender Medium to slow the drying time. This makes acrylic painting much more enjoyable and takes the stress out of the quick drying aspect of the paint.
That said, this painting technique is helping you build skills and applies to oil painting methods as well.
Watch a short time lapse video of the whole painting process. Naturally this is speeded up almost 600 times faster than normal speed. Wouldn't it be fun if we could paint this fast?

Indirect Application and Blocking In - Another Painting Method

Kings River Landscape - with Art Teacher Linda Wise. If you enjoy painting landscapes the second study in this class explores the true Indirect Painting Method. Learn to use the paint application made popular by the Old Dutch Masters. Multiple layers of paint are applied to create form, depth and luminosity. Beginning with transparent applications of umber pigments, the artist creates the initial layer, next opaque layers are used to build form, and subsequent transparent layers are applied to create the local color of objects. Learn to apply transparent colored layers to create optical effects

Bell Pepper - Block & Blend as it is often called is also a combination of both indirect and direct painting methods. A majority of artists combine both paint applications to create a single painting. Initial layers are often blended directly, and after this first layer has dried, indirect applications of transparent colors are glazed over opaque layers to assist in the further creation of form. This style of blending also renders a painterly style of brushwork. In this simple design, artist Susan Abdella shows how she uses a blocking in blending method to create form.
