Layering and Blocking-In
2 Instructors - 2 paintings - 2 skills There are many different ways to apply paint to the canvas. For a new painter it's always a good thing to know as many of them as you can. Knowing different painting techniques opens up a greater understanding of painting styles in general. The more techniques you master, the wider the range of painting subjects you will want to try. Instructors Susan Abdella and Linda Wise will teach two different painting methods. Their approach is completely different.
Layering is an Indirect Painting Technique Kings River Landscape - with Art Teacher Linda Wise. If you enjoy painting landscapes the second study in this class explores a true layering or Indirect Painting Method. Learn to use the paint application made popular by the Old Dutch Masters. Multiple layers of paint are applied to create form, depth and luminosity. Beginning with transparent applications of umber pigments, the artist creates the initial layer, next opaque layers are used to build form, and subsequent transparent layers are applied to create the local color of objects. Learn how to apply transparent colored layers to create optical effects Blocking-In is a Direct or 'wet in wet' Painting Technique Bell Pepper - This style of painting technique renders a more 'painterly' style of brushwork. In this simple design, Susan Abdella shows how she uses a blocking in blending method to create the initial form. Blocking - In or Block & Blend as it is sometimes called is a combination of both indirect and direct painting methods. A majority of artists combine both paint applications within a single painting. Initial layers are often blended directly, and after the first layer has dried, indirect applications of transparent colors are glazed over opaque layers to assist in the further creation of dimensional form.
