This is an extensive study E-Packet - In this lesson, artist and teacher Susan Abdella provides step by step instructions and photographs to complete this painting using a popular painting method used by the Old Masters of the Golden Age.
General Theory used in this Lesson:
Using the values of the “Dead Layer” to create form.
Viewing the design as a whole. In other words think of the bouquet as an oval, rounded and convex. The light is coming from the lower left. The light area of the oval would be the lower left quadrant. The rose, large daisy and leaf are in this area and haven’t we been taught to shade, in this case, the base of the leaf since the rose and daisy are on top of it? Well the Flemish didn’t do this and I think they were right. Those 3 elements and the bud are in the front and therefore in the direct path of light.
Objectives of the Lesson:
-
Understand and appreciate the steps and reasoning of the classic Flemish painting method.
-
Become proficient with using color glazes.
-
Develop form and interest in flowers through the use of the “dead layer”.
-
Understand and appreciate the symbolism used in Dutch Golden Age Paintings.
