Objectives of this painting lesson This art theory painting lesson is written for the artist who wants to learn about the most important properties of color; harmony, intensity, value, and temperature. I will walk you through my thought process every step of the way through this painting and how to make colors work together. It’s actually a simple process of using toners to marry colors together and control intensities. The more the colors have in common with each other the better they look side by side. The main colors used in this painting are red and green which is a ‘Complimentary’ color scheme. These two complimentary colors have nothing in common, and when placed side by side a natural vibration occurs. Toners are used to give colors one, two, or three colors in common. For instance Raw Umber, Grey, White, and Raw Sienna are earth colors and will tone high intensity colors plus harmonize both red and green together. |
