Watercolor Tips - Watercolor papers Watercolor paper is available in pads, blocks and also in large single sheets. There are lots of brands, sizes, weights, and textures to choose from. You can try various brands and you will discover those you like. For best results you will want to use a high quality paper. For this particular painting a medium to light texture is desirable. The surface texture will affect the style of your painting. We also do not do a lot of rough scrubbing, lifting or scratching so 140# weight is ideal. A cold press paper will absorb more water and is lightly textured. Hot pressed paper is very smooth and does not absorb as much water as the cold pressed papers. Generally the style you intend to paint will be a determining factor in which type of paper you choose. For example if you are painting very realistic botanical portraits you will get the best results on a hot pressed paper because of the smooth finish and you generally have more control because as mentioned the paper is not as absorbent as the cold press papers. That said,I generally paint on 140# or 300# cold press papers. I do not want to endorse one brand over another but I will advise you not to settle for the very cheapest paper you can find. All good quality papers are acid free. You can also paint with watercolors on velum and illustration board. The very best watercolor papers are 100% cotton fiber. Again, you will get better end results with higher quality paper. |
