Sue's Approach is Simple

Learning Outcome

Sue's goal is to help the artist to 'see' and paint flowers that are realistic.

  • Learn how to create twists, turns, folds, ruffles, flower centers and petal details so you will know how to paint a flower with confidence. All your flower paintings will illustrate greater realism. Sue's approach is to simply walk the student, step by step through the basic anatomy of the flower relative to its mass and form. With her in-depth explanations, you will come away with a greater love for painting floral themes as you will be better armed with the knowledge and skills to approach them with more confidence.
  • Have you ever wondered how artists know how to paint so many different varities of flowers? This class will help you understand the shape of a flower petal and how easy that petal is to paint by dissecting the flower shape. Artist Sue Pruett is known for her love of gardening and painting flowers. In this foundational course, Sue explores different flower petal shapes and teaches the student how to recognize specific forms in the flower petals.
  • Complete three paintings that reinforce the goals of the lesson.

Understanding the Basics of Flower Anatomy

The class begins with students understanding the basics of flower anatomy and form. With this foundation in place, artist Sue Pruett begins to teach the first of three floral studies. The design featured above is study #1. Here students learn with the help of several videos, text lessons and reference photos to paint using the theory behind the design elements. The focus is on learning how to paint flowers close up. It is important when learning how to paint flowers step by step, that students have a solid grasp of how real garden flowers will grow.

  1. Great class

Posted by Margo M. on 27th Jan 2016

Great class, very detailed and lots of close-ups! High quality videos, everything can be clearly seen, and tons of written information. I can imagine the amount of time teachers at AAO put in all their classes. I would love to see more flower classes/still life compositions, I love Sue's approach to study them first and then paint them. Helps a lot! I cannot believe how much I learned at this school in just one year! Joining this school was one of the best decisions ever made! Lots of inspiration and knowledge. It was worth every penny I spent.

  2. My vote for best class!

Posted by Alice S. Jackson on 14th Feb 2015

Sue Pruett's class on Petal Concepts is the best class I have taken! I have been taking art classes for 8 years now and this class has taught me more than any class! She is very informative and teaches you to touch the petals so you can feel the smoothness or texture. You can then know how to paint the flower. You learn to paint so the colors will make the petal turn toward you or away from you. She makes it easy to learn just what to do with the flower to make it look so real. I encourage all of you to purchase this class and take your time and you can paint it just like Sue does! God bless you all!

  3. A WOW class!

Posted by Joy on 10th Mar 2014

This was a wonderful, informative class. So much is taught in this class, not only about painting flowers but about fundamental painting i.e. lights and darks, making things recede and come forward, and why and how these are applied. Sue makes flowers come to life. I recommend this class to all artists, beginners and advanced. Great close ups of each step really makes it easy to follow.
Bonus: Sue also shows you how to paint waterdrops!!

  4. Painting flowers is a joy!

Posted by Gail from CT on 8th Feb 2013

Sue's class on flowers is excellent, taking you from flower structure and a photo through to your completed paintings. The last painting in the series also includes a wonderful video on waterdrops. The camera is so close you feel like you are watching from Sue's brush! I love being able to pause, and rerun, allowing me time to paint my best. If you love flowers, this class is for you!

  5. Rockin Flower Petals

I am so pleased that I signed up for this class when it was posted on the daily specials! It is worth every penny even at regular price. Sue is a wonderful teacher explaining techniques and demonstrating them on the videos, and answering all your questions. Can't say enough--can't wait to get into the lessons and painting everyday.
