Learn the Art of Cave Painting

Perfect for the Beginning Artist and Fun For All Skill Levels

So what are Cave paintings? Please read on...

Cave Paintings are simple compositions created in prehistoric times during the Upper Paleolithic period. That's 30,000 years ago! They are considered the earliest art forms in the world! They have been found at numerous locations around the globe. It is suggested that these paintings were used for decorations, but in fact it has yet to be determined the real reason.

These paintings were created with natural iron oxide pigments that were found in the earth. In this class you'll learn about the use of early pigments and how you too can use them to create contemporary designs that are fashioned after the style of early cave art. These cave paintings represent the beginning of Art and Art Materials as we know them today. No prior skills are required for this, just jump in and have fun. This is a most enjoyable way to paint and is a perfect 'project' for you to do alone or with the help of a youngster. This painting lesson is also for school age kids as well as adult learners.

After reading about this class, watch the short video presentation about the famous cave paintings of the Lascaux Caves in France.  (see the link below) This will give you a greater appreciation for the art and understand why these are some of the earliest and most treasured art forms found in the world.

The site where our first painting exercise comes from, named the Lascaux Caves was declared a World Heritage Site in 1979. Watch the video for more background on the art of cave art.

Learn to Paint Using Prehistoric Techniques and Tools

The goals of this class:

  • Learn to paint a prehistoric cave painting using modern acrylic media (paint).
  • Replicate the simple techniques used by early cave dwellers. Learn to do what they did to make art.
  • Discover how to use faux painting techniques to replicate the look of limestone cave walls.
  • Discover the history & beginning of art as we know it today.
  • Learn about ancient pigments (early paint materials) and how they were discovered and used.
  • This is a fun and interactive class for both novice and experienced painters alike.

Course Materials Are Broken Into Bite Size Pieces

  • One painted study is completed during the class. Instead of cave walls we use canvas! Starting with instructional videos, students learn about early painting tools and methods. This helps to explain and teach about the actual painting process of the cave dwellers.
  • Prior to starting the first painted study, you’ll have a well-rounded view of the subjects we’re covering. As we move through the videos and written lessons together, you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment with each new discovery about ancient cave art history and the painting methods used.
  • There are classroom forums where you'll upload photographs of your work, and questions and answers are shared between students and the instructor when needed.
  • This helps you know that you are on the right track. If there are any issues or challenges, these Q & A’s forums help clarify anything that might not be completely clear to you.

CLASS REVIEWS

I love loved doing this class.

"I love loved doing this class. It was great fun. I love the way you present these classes and the attention to detail that goes into each one even to the point where the beginning and end music and pictures compliment the classes. I also like all the background info and the site you found on the cave paintings is amazing. As always you teach more than just how to do that particular painting.

This is a great painting to do and am thinking of doing one on a stone vase or something though I have my hands full with the other courses at the moment. Only trouble is I don't think I will remember all the layers and colors once the class is over. Unfortunately when I added the water at the end for the orange in spite of having put on protection it did strip off the layers below. Thanks for a great class.- Fay S."
