Acrylic Painting Technique - The Art of Refined Blending

If painting floral and still Life sharp-focus realism appeals to your artistic nature, you've come to the right class. If you struggle with the basic acrylic blending skills required to describe this style... this course has been specifically developed for you.

The surface of an object will dictate which type of blending technique will be used to render the object. Artists must be proficient in a variety of blending techniques that can achieve all surface textures. Such as smooth, rough, shiny, dull, reflective, transparent, furry, fluffy and so on.

In this online class...

  • Explore the tools, brushes, hand position and techniques necessary for refined blending.
  • Learn blending skills to describe realistic styles of painting for floral and still life subjects.
  • Work on mastering brush techniques as you follow and paint along with the instructor.
  • Many hours of videos will show several blending exercises for the creation of form and surface texture while experimenting with different common shapes and elements.
  • Learn how to paint a variety of leaves.
  • Several paintings are completed during this course.
  • The sooner you learn this style of blending technique, the closer you are to painting sharp focus realism!
  • Learn painting techniques that will help the student focus on value - (light to dark)
  • Learn to use a refined blending style.

*Acrylic Self paced for self study - Students have unlimited access to class materials... no time limit restrictions.

stage-1-tulip-close-up.jpgLearn how to create three dimension - Art teacher Sue Pruett has designed this class so the student can reinforce their blending skills. The class materials cover 'wet in wet' blending and a first stage grisaille (grey scale) underpainting is the first of the many valuable exercises included in this class. The grisaille underpainting helps the student recognize the form of the flower and paint a more three dimensional painting. It sounds a lot more complex than it really is, but once you see how the teacher demonstrates these steps, you will be thrilled with what you learn.

  1. Another excellent AAO class

Posted by Michelle on 16th Jan 2016

Sue does such a wonderful job teaching the skill of blending. Before I took this class, as a self-taught artist, I really didn't know much more than side- load shading, but after this class, I have so much more understanding of shading, highlighting, blending values, creating a value scale, and so much more. I highly recommend this class. I also love that access to all the classes has been extended to unlimited. I originally purchased this class with a 3 month access time and although I completed it, I love that now I can always go back at any time to review whenever I want. Thank you, thank you, thank you AAO for all of your excellent classes and allowing unlimited access.

  2. Excellent fundamental class

Posted by Margo M. on 4th Jul 2015

This was one of my first classes at AAO, and it helped me so much! Sue is absolutely excellent at teaching, she makes hard things easy. The class is a joy to follow, I can rewind the videos as many times as I want, I can access the classroom any time, and I can get answers to my questions very quickly! The quality of the videos is excellent. Close-ups of the hardest elements of the painting process are demonstrated and explained. Everything is backed up with the written information. I love online learning, and this school is absolutely the best at it! My paintings improved a great deal ever since I joined this school!

  3. a professional approach

Posted by Irene Flissinger (Bach Bus Mkt, Post Grad Dip V.E. T.) on 29th May 2015

Obviously this programme has been professionally developed. Students at any level of art learning can follow along easily, with videos supporting the text, tutor support and the discussion boards. Opportunities to submit works also help the learner to build on their newly acquired skills.
My concept of colour mixing is a little different, but that is irrelevant for this review.

  6. Blending never seemed so easy

Posted by Ron Reiff on 13th Oct 2014

I have taken quite a few on-line art courses but NONE can compare to the value this course has added to my art projects. Sue is not only a great artist but......thankfully for us students........or apprentices if you will.... Sue is a GREAT instructor. I highly recommend this course for anybody that wants to add real life and realism to their art work.

  7. Great Learning Experience

If you are on a quest, as I am to become a better painter, this is one technique you will definitely want to master, and Sue Pruett is exceptional in this area. I very much enjoyed the class. Sue is a very patient and thorough instructor, and is there with you each step of the way giving you feedback and helping you do your best work. The end result for me is I now have two beautiful paintings as well as having gained desired result of learning how to blend. I could not be more satisfied. Thanks Sue, it was fun and frustrating and oh so worth it.

  8. Ta DAAAAA

I did it! Sue has just given me the final ok for my Tulip which means I have passed this Class. Sue is a wonderful, patient teacher and I have learned a lot in this class. She has helped me to perfect these paintings (by constant encouragement, critiques and tips) which I will proudly hang on my wall. I encourage anybody and everybody to sign up for this class. You will not regret it! Thank you, Sue

  9. Important for me

This class opened doors for me. I struggled with understanding blending. You taught me how to do this with ease. Thank you Sue.

  10. Very Helpful to me.

Posted by Unknown on 16th Dec 2010

I have always liked a smooth blended look of some paintings. I didn't know how it was done. I learned so much about the blending techniques needed for painting realism. Now I understand how to go about this. Good teaching demonstrations and I enjoyed the video lessons. Very nice presentation.

  11. Great Class

Posted by Unknown on 7th Dec 2010

I've taken this class as well as the black and white tulip class. The paintings are done with different techniques. Great to have the knowledge of both techniques. The videos were easy to follow and I loved my results.
