So What is Red Figure Greek Painting?

Red-figure Pottery is a style of Greek vase painting that was invented in Athens around 530 BCE. The style is characterized by drawn red figures and a painted black background.

  • While painting a decorative Greek pottery vase painting, students explore the artistic reasons for using pigment opacity and transparency based on this particular method of painting. This knowledge and understanding can be used on other future painting projects

  • The painted decorations that we see on the vases are described as silhouettes painted on a red orange (clay) background.
  • Artists depicted scenes from mythology and interpreted everyday life as stories that are painted on clay vases.
  • In this class, discover how opaque and transparent colors create these beautiful art works. The choice of subject for this class lends an historical element while teaching art principles and techniques important for learning to paint.

  1. Outstanding techniques in this class

Posted by Margo M. on 26th Dec 2015

Sue did such a great job painting this vase, that it took me a year to figure out that it was a painting! lol I thought the class was about painting a pattern on the vase surface, when it is actually a painting of the vase on canvas! Of course, I wanted to know how Sue painted this vase so realistically, so I got the class! There are so many interesting techniques in this class! And I fell in love with Greek vases now! Great class! I can buy anything that Sue makes with closed eyes, and it always turns out to be a success! Thank you!
