Four painting studies for this online art course

At some point in life we've either been to the ocean or wished we could visit the ocean. Either way, if you can’t feel the sand between your toes or the salt on your skin... the next best thing is to learn to paint the ocean! How to paint waves? Where do we begin? Let me share this with you…Having lived near the ocean, and on a small tropical island in the Caribbean, I have come to know this subject well. It has been a life long pastime to beach comb, study the continuous movement and the unpredictable happenings of the sea, her waves, colors and shorelines. Painting Seascapes is a passion I want to share with you.

In this class you'll enjoy trying your hand at a variety of seascape paintings; there are four individual studies in this class. From the simple sand dune to the crashing waves, and tidal pools, each painting will help you understand the characteristics of moving water as well as the elements found along the shoreline.

Essential to the success of painting seascapes is a basic understanding of the ocean’s ever changing moods and colors. And like anything else, knowing our subject and how light, weather and atmosphere influences these colors is a major part of painting the ocean so it looks realistic. Getting good results depends on several things, from understanding the anatomy of sand, to water and waves, to creating a composition that will be inspiring and fun to paint. But the main thing is to feel you can approach any seascape composition with confidence.

Neadeen demonstrates how to paint a tonal under-painting to build the first layers of the sand dunes.

The first painting lesson is a simple sand dune painting. The goal of this lesson is to learn how to use a tonal under-painting (seen in the short video above) so simple color harmony can be learned for painting sand. The lesson also helps the student work with one specific light source. This painting lesson will prepare you for future paintings of dunes and beach grasses.

Shallow Water & Wet Sand: As the artist studies the anatomy of a beach, they also learn to divide the beach into different zones. At the waters edge, there are two topics that need to be understood.  One is shallow water, where the waves creep up onto the shore. The signature they leave behind is the zone of wet sand after they recede back into the ocean. Wet sand is highly reflective and will exhibit the colors of the sky and the sand itself. This area will also provide the artist with a way to carry color, and create texture which adds to the interest of the composition. Come away with a different perspective of the beach...

Understanding the Colors and Values of the Ocean

  • This class is taught with artist grade acrylics - However the lessons could easily be adapted for oil painting.
  • There are many classroom forums where you'll upload photographs of your work, and questions and answers are shared between students and me the instructor. This helps you know that you are on the right track. If there are any issues or challenges, these Q & A’s forums help clarify anything that might not be completely clear to you.
