Direct Painting Technique

Paint A Landscape - Cottage In A Cornfield

Have you ever wanted to just sit and start painting? Yes... I am sure you have. Direct Painting is a fundamental blending method where the subject is completed in one or two sittings. It's a fast and fun way to approach any landscape painting.

Landscape painting is perhaps the most popular subject artists want to paint. It is by far one of the most diverse and commonly seen, mostly because we are surrounded by the subject. There's no shortage of material to paint, and we are enticed by the different 'looks' this subject can be depicted in. If you've wanted to try this popular subject, then you are in the right place to get your feet and brushes wet.

Using a Direct Painting technique renders a more painterly or loose style of painting that is perfect for the painter who wants to learn how to paint landscapes quickly. Grab a prepared canvas surface, and go directly to painting the finished composition - that's the goal!

  • Art Instructor Neadeen Masters (me) begins the painting session in this online art class with step by step demonstrations and she explains how and why she is using the brush, adjusting the paint and creating the basic shapes of the clouds.
  • Neadeen shows you how to set up the palette, load the brush and begin the formation of the sky. As a new painter, you will learn so much by simply viewing how the teacher approaches the canvas and begins the landscape painting.
  • These are all Fundamental painting skills you will carry forward to use in other landscape paintings.

Learn to paint, simple and fast clouds, foliage and trees!!
Observe as Neadeen shares the painting technique, how to use eye/hand coordination to control the brush to create certain effects. Being able to paint with a casual approach is a fun and relaxing way to learn to paint. This painting lesson is created with acrylic paints, easy to use and clean up. Acrylics dry quickly, so Neadeen shows you how to use Extender Medium to slow the drying time. This makes acrylic painting much more enjoyable and takes the stress out of the quick drying aspect of the paint.

  • There are many classroom forums where you'll upload photographs of your work, and questions and answers are shared between students and me the instructor. Feedback is very important for the new student. This helps you know that you are on the right track. If there are any issues or challenges, these Q & A’s forums help clarify anything that might not be completely clear to you. All our students love the forums.

Watch and learn from the best seat in the house

One of the greatest benefits to taking an online class like this, is having the ability to hit the rewind button. If you need to re-watch a particular painting technique more than once, you can do so with a click. This also gives you lots of time to practice and digest the information at your own pace. Watching the videos from the best seat in the house gives you an over the shoulder view of the whole painting process from start to finish.

Below is a short video snippet of the final painting details from the online class. You can see every stroke at very close range.

This class was wet on wet painting. It was a challenge in that it made you work fast, leave detail with your brush and "leave it alone". The class was very clearly presented and easy to follow. I enjoyed the technique and learnt alot.
