|The Technical Basics of Painting Fur|
If you wonder about how to paint animals, you must also wonder about painting animal fur. If painting animals, painting lions and realistic wildlife are subjects you’ve always wanted to master, then learning to paint convincing fur details is the key to your success. There are specific painting techniques you can learn that will make painting lions and cougars, and other animal fur much easier than it seems. The secret is in knowing what to look for and knowing how to describe the animals you see.
From time to time we've all struggled with painting animal fur textures and patterns that aren’t quite believable. It can be overwhelming and very frustrating when we don’t understand how to approach the subject. In order to get authentic results we must first learn how to break it down into bite size pieces. As a maturing artist, I too struggled with painting animal fur until I had a major breakthrough about the concepts of visual texture and dimension. This immediately changed the way I approached the subject and since then, I’ve never looked back!
Let me share with you the learning outcomes for this wildlife art class...First, you’ll learn how to see and read fur textures and colors. Then as you paint the four animal studies; the rabbit, cougar, two zebras and a large male lion. Each study will help you focus on the different qualities and characteristics of their fur. For example, we'll explore the type, length, texture, and color patterns for each animal. As you paint along with my in-depth and detailed video demonstrations, you’ll also discover a new level of appreciation for the uniqueness of each animal's fur details. 'Seeing' will become easier and easier as we move forward.
Makes Learning Easy - Course Materials Are Broken Into Bite Size Pieces
One of the animal studies in this course is the large male lion. If you have ever tried painting lions, you already know how much detail there is to this animal's face, mane and expression. Painting lions in a realistic manner takes practise and a planned approach. I will show you how to take this comples study and break it down into step by step layers that are easier to manage.
"I have learned so much from this class – more than I thought possible." - Linda Etten
Student Testimonial - "I have learned so much from this class – more than I thought possible. It was daunting in the beginning and it definitely took time and patience. Neadeen gives super instructions, both with her videos and step-by-step instructions. I learned so much about working with a limited palette and her tips on painting short fur were invaluable. Before taking this class I attempted painting animals but they always turned out looking flat and childlike. The great thing is I could paint on my schedule – some days only an hour or so. This, I found out, actually helped me see mistakes early on because it gave me a chance to look at my painting from a distance. In my hometown there aren’t many options for someone who wants to learn to improve their painting skills. Those that I’ve tried haven’t come close to what I have learned through Art Apprentice and their fantastic instructors. I can’t say enough good things about this course. If you want to learn to paint fur, you have to try this class."
Painting Lions that look realistic!
Watch and learn from the best seat in the house
One of the greatest benefits to taking an online class like this, is having the ability to hit the rewind button. If you need to re-watch a particular painting technique more than once, you can do so with a click. This also gives you lots of time to practice and digest the information at your own pace. Watching the videos from the best seat in the house gives you an over the shoulder view of the whole painting process from start to finish. Below is a short video snippet of the final painting details from the male lion. You can see every stroke at very close range.

As always the AAO have delivered above and beyond. I have had to wait a long time before I could buy it and it was well worth the wait.
This is a comprehensive course that shows you all the aspects you really need to paint realistic fur. Neadeen explains things beautifully and breaks things down in steps and explains the elements needed so that you can then paint your own animals.
