The formal description for direct painting is that it is known as alla prima or premier coup painting. This refers to a painting method where the artist applies strokes of paint in one sitting, with the intention of letting it become the final application. There is no over-painting after the first layer of paint has dried. This technique was made popular by the impressionistic painters of the nineteenth century. It renders a more 'painterly' style of art. In this course, students will paint a simple country landscape painting after the style of the famous English landscape artist John Constable. The landscape is called, 'Cottage In A Cornfield'.
Direct Painting techniques take a fast and simple approach to painting.
