Take your painting skills to another level as painting still life is a sure way to expand your knowledge about light, surface textures and creating depth and dimension using value and a grey scales. This in-depth class, covers the fundamentals as well as stresses the importance of correct perspective, and the accurate placement of values. This is an excellent class for all painters regardless of skill level, but most especially for the artist wanting to paint realistic still life compositions.

Learning Out Come:
  • Learn to Proof a design for accuracy.
  • Learn to create a value sketch or value drawing prior to painting. This exercise will also enhance your skills for still life drawing.
  • Explore and learn to apply both an umber and gray scale under-painting. This is very important for rendering realism as well as color harmony. This painting method was used in many of the old Dutch still life paintings that are seen in museums today.
  • Learn to develop a three dimensional composition with correct value placement for 3D form.
  • Learn how to trouble shoot the design elements prior to painting with proofing exercises and by rendering a graphite pencil shading.
  • This course also teaches the student how to render a grouping of objects, establish value relationships and create depth and dimension within a still life painting.
  • Discover the effects of value placement for creating surface textures such as metal.

IMPORTANT Suggestion: It is highly recommended that students have a good understanding of the concept of form. Taking Core class #3 will be very helpful to the success of this still life painting. Core Class #4 builds on the concepts taught in Core Class #3.
